Google and XREAL Unveil AURA as First Android XR Smart Glasses
Google and XREAL unveil AURA, the first commercial smart glasses powered by Android XR, offering tethered spatial computing and multi-window productivity.

Pioneering Hardware for Spatial Computing Ecosystems
Google and augmented reality manufacturer XREAL have formally announced XREAL AURA, marking the commercial debut of dedicated smart glasses powered by the newly developed Android XR platform. Designed as a lightweight wearable bridge between smartphones and spatial computing environments, AURA represents a significant milestone in Google effort to standardize immersive spatial computing experiences across the broader Android ecosystem without demanding cumbersome standalone headsets.

Unlike heavy battery-laden virtual reality visors, XREAL AURA utilizes a high-bandwidth tethered connection to compatible Android smartphones, laptops, and gaming consoles. To guarantee broad accessibility and ergonomic comfort, the optical module includes adjustable nose pads, prescription lens inserts, and electrochromic dimming lenses that seamlessly adapt to indoor and sunny outdoor lighting conditions. The glasses project expansive virtual screens directly in front of the wearer using advanced micro-OLED optical displays capable of delivering crisp text rendering, ultra-low latency tracking, and vibrant color reproduction.
Native Android App Support and Multi-Window Workflows

At the software foundation, Android XR provides full native compatibility with millions of existing Google Play Store applications. Users can seamlessly anchor multiple floating application windows within their physical surroundings, simultaneously running video editing software, messaging clients, and web browsers across expansive spatial canvases. Advanced spatial audio drivers integrated into the frame temples deliver localized soundscapes while dual outward-facing tracking cameras enable intuitive six degrees of freedom gesture interaction.
The system also incorporates intelligent contextual assistance through Google Gemini models, enabling wearers to query visual scenes, transcribe real-time conversations, and automate administrative tasks using spoken voice commands. Enterprise customers will also benefit from dedicated administrative deployment tools, centralized software policy management, and encrypted data channels suitable for confidential corporate operations. Google highlighted that developer preview kits for Android XR are rolling out immediately to software engineers worldwide, with initial retail shipments of the XREAL AURA hardware scheduled to commence across North America and European territories in early 2027. Full hardware specifications and system requirements can be reviewed in the official product overview on the Google Blog.
