Mewgenics Sold 1 Million Copies in a Week. Now Its Cat Army Is Coming to Consoles
Mewgenics went from a strange cat breeding roguelike to one of 2026's biggest indie successes almost overnight

Mewgenics went from a strange cat breeding roguelike to one of 2026's biggest indie successes almost overnight. It recovered its entire development budget in three hours, sold one million copies in a week, passed 115,000 simultaneous Steam players, and now it is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 8.
Mewgenics is difficult to explain without making it sound slightly insane. You breed generations of cats, inherit their genetics, mutations and unfortunate defects, assign them combat abilities, then send your increasingly strange family into difficult turn based battles. It comes from Edmund McMillen, creator of The Binding of Isaac, and developer Tyler Glaiel. Steam describes it simply as building the "ultimate cat army."
Then people actually bought it. A lot of people.
Within its first week, Mewgenics sold one million copies. Its Steam player count peaked at 115,428, and Tyler Glaiel revealed that the developers had already recovered the game's entire development budget just three hours after release.
The Cats Are Coming to Consoles
The next step is much bigger. At Gamescom Opening Night Live, Mewgenics was confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 8, 2026. The PlayStation announcement describes the same wonderfully chaotic formula: breed cats across generations, manipulate their genetics, combine abilities and send the resulting feline army into increasingly brutal tactical adventures.
That console release could introduce a huge new audience to a game that has so far only been available on PC. Steam currently shows 91% positive English reviews from more than 28,000 players, which is impressive considering how quickly the game exploded.
The actual gameplay is deeper than the cat jokes suggest. Every generation matters. Cats inherit traits from their parents, while abilities, equipment and mutations can completely change how a run plays. Lose a powerful cat and the next generation may force you to build an entirely different team.
That mixture of strategy, randomness and slightly disturbing cat genetics is exactly what helped Mewgenics stand out.
Gamescom Somehow Made It Even Stranger
The console announcement was not presented with a normal trailer and a quick release date.
Gamescom gave Mewgenics a live musical performance.
Ridiculon performed "Guillotina" on stage during Opening Night Live, turning one of the year's strangest indie successes into one of the stranger moments of the entire Gamescom show.
And the developers are not finished. Edmund McMillen recently confirmed that they have started working on a free DLC, partly in response to players who reached extremely long playtimes and wanted more to do with their enormous collections of cats. The team is also working on ways to make managing a house full of cats easier once players reach the hundreds of hours mark.
That might be the most impressive part of the whole story. Mewgenics spent years becoming one of those indie games people wondered if they would ever actually play. Then it launched, made its development money back before most people had finished dinner, sold a million copies in a week and became one of Steam's biggest roguelike launches.
Now the cats are leaving PC.
Mewgenics launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 8, 2026.
