Double Fine Escaped Xbox. Now Fans Get to Choose What It Makes Next
Psychonauts developer Double Fine is independent again after seven years with Xbox

Psychonauts developer Double Fine is independent again after seven years with Xbox. It has regained ownership of its games, purchases now directly support the studio, and on August 31 it is returning to Kickstarter with a wonderfully chaotic idea: show fans a pile of game pitches, let them choose four, build all four in public, then turn one into a real game.
There are easier ways to announce your return to independence.
You could release a serious corporate statement. Maybe put Tim Schafer in front of a tasteful grey wall. Talk about "strategic opportunities." Use the word "synergy" until everybody falls asleep.
Double Fine has decided to let the internet vote on weird game ideas instead.
After joining Xbox in 2019, Double Fine officially became independent again in July as part of Microsoft's huge Xbox restructuring. Microsoft confirmed that Double Fine and Compulsion Games would leave Xbox with their IP, game catalogues and funding runway intact. Double Fine thanked Xbox for seven years together and confirmed that ownership of its games had returned to the studio.
That last part is important. Tim Schafer has since confirmed that when you buy games such as Psychonauts 2 or Keeper, the money now supports Double Fine directly. Some storefronts may still show old Microsoft publishing information, but the studio controls the games again.
Basically, Raz has custody of his own brain again.
And Now Double Fine Wants the Internet to Pick a Game
On August 31, Double Fine launches Amnesia Fortnight 2026: Indie Reboot, a Kickstarter campaign, game jam and documentary happening at the same time.
This is not a normal Kickstarter where the game has already been chosen and everyone waits three years for updates.
Double Fine employees will pitch a collection of completely new game ideas. Backers vote. Four ideas get selected and turned into playable prototypes. Then one of those four will be chosen for further development into a real small game under Double Fine's new Action Labs label.
So yes, somebody at Double Fine could pitch:
"You play as a depressed refrigerator trying to become a jazz musician."
And there is now a non-zero chance the internet can make everyone build it.
That is dangerous power.
Watch What Amnesia Fortnight Actually Looks Like
Amnesia Fortnight has existed inside Double Fine since 2007. For two weeks, normal work stops and developers form tiny teams around experimental ideas. The process has already produced concepts that became Costume Quest, Stacking, Iron Brigade and even the Psychonauts 2 level Compton's Cookoff.
This time, we get to watch the entire mess.
2 Player Productions will film the development process, while Double Fine plans to stream parts of the game jam live. Their stated goals include showing how games actually get built and, apparently, answering the ancient question of what Tim Schafer eats for breakfast.
Finally, journalism gets the answers that matter.
This Is Bigger Than Just Another Kickstarter
GAMEPLAY IMAGE
Double Fine becoming independent matters because it is one of gaming's most recognizable creative studios. Its catalogue includes Psychonauts, Brütal Legend, Broken Age, Grim Fandango Remastered, Psychonauts 2, Keeper and this year's extremely Double Fine sounding multiplayer game Kiln.
If you have never seen Kiln, players make pottery on an actual virtual pottery wheel and then use those pots as bodies in multiplayer combat.
That sentence is real.

Double Fine describes Kiln as a "pottery party brawler," because apparently choosing only one genre would have been cowardice.
The studio's strange games are exactly why its independence is worth watching. Under Xbox, Double Fine had the financial security to make unusual projects such as Keeper, a game about a walking lighthouse accompanied by a bird. Now it has control again, but also has to survive as an independent company.
That comes with real pressure.
Double Fine reduced its workforce by 23 employees during the transition, and Schafer has been open about returning to smaller projects as part of making the studio sustainable. The Kickstarter is not just a nostalgia exercise. Double Fine's own announcement literally says it hopes crowdfunding can help the newly independent studio "stay alive."
Suddenly the silly game jam has some fairly serious stakes.
Fans Have Already Started Asking for the Obvious Things
Double Fine's community celebrated the studio's return, then immediately did what gaming communities do best: started demanding sequels.
On Double Fine's own Reddit announcement, fans quickly asked for Psychonauts on Switch 2, a Psychonauts 2 DLC, another Brütal Legend and even a giant collection containing the studio's games and documentaries.
One comment simply said:
"Looking forward to Brü2al Legend."
Another:
"Please bring Keeper and Kiln to Switch 2 and PS5!"
And then there are the people asking for Psychonauts 3, because apparently giving a newly independent studio five minutes to unpack its boxes would be unreasonable.

For now, Double Fine is deliberately going smaller. Four prototypes. One winner. One strange little game that might not exist without players voting for it.
And that is what makes this story more interesting than a normal studio announcement.
Double Fine spent seven years under one of the largest companies in gaming. Now it is independent again, owns its catalogue, and its first major move is basically:
"Okay internet. Here are our terrible ideas. Pick one."
The Kickstarter launches August 31, 2026.
For once, yelling about which game a developer should make next might actually accomplish something.
