A Castle on Wheels Just Won Gamescom's Most Entertaining Award

Wanderburg has just won the Most Entertaining award at Gamescom 2026, and honestly, one look at it explains why

Wanderburg has just won the Most Entertaining award at Gamescom 2026, and honestly, one look at it explains why. You drive a giant medieval castle on wheels, eat villages, absorb sheep, bolt cannons and wizard towers onto your fortress, then hunt other moving castles until yours becomes an increasingly unreasonable war machine. It enters Steam Early Access on September 8.

Gamescom had Onimusha, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, The Witcher, Forza Horizon 6 and plenty of other massive games competing for attention this year. Then a small German indie game arrived with a castle that has wheels and apparently decided subtlety was unnecessary.

Wanderburg, developed by Randwerk and published by Sidekick Publishing, has officially won Most Entertaining at the Gamescom Awards 2026, beating Bad Magpie, Denshattack!, Escape from Duckov and There Are No Ghosts at the Grand.

The concept is extremely easy to understand.

You are the castle.

Not the king. Not the knight. Not the little person defending the castle.

The castle.

You begin each run with a relatively modest fortress. Then you start moving.

Villages flee from you. Sheep scatter across the countryside. Enemy castles appear in the distance. Anything smaller than you is basically food.

Destroy and consume enough of the world and your fortress physically grows. New sections appear, your weapons become increasingly ridiculous, and eventually your adorable little moving castle starts looking like somebody attached an entire medieval military budget to several enormous wheels.

The developers describe the world as an ecosystem of roaming fortresses where only the biggest stronghold survives. That means another castle is not scenery. It is either a threat or lunch.

Very healthy neighbourhood relations.

Your Castle Can Become Completely Ridiculous

The fun part is building the thing.

You can attach cannons, siege weapons, explosives and arcane towers staffed by actual wizards. Different modules can be combined into different builds, while new vehicles, artifacts and captains unlock between runs.

Wanderburg fortress combat

One run might turn your fortress into a wall of artillery. Another could focus on magical weapons. Steam's description even mentions knights riding bicycles into battle, which raises several questions I am not sure I want answered.

The whole thing plays like a mixture of roguelike progression, bullet heaven chaos, driving and strategy. You are constantly moving, choosing targets and trying to grow before one of the larger castles on the map notices that you exist.

Imagine Vampire Survivors, except the survivor is a three-storey building with cannons.

That is roughly where we are.

The Game Was Already Getting Huge Before the Award

The Gamescom award did not come completely out of nowhere. Earlier this year, Randwerk said Wanderburg had already passed 400,000 Steam wishlists, while more than 300,000 players had tried its demo.

The free demo is still available, and its current Steam reception is Very Positive, with more than 1,300 reviews and around 91% positive feedback.

That is a strong response for a game that has not even entered Early Access yet.

The demo also revealed exactly why the concept works so well. Watching a fortress slowly evolve from a tiny vehicle into something that occupies half the screen gives every run an obvious sense of progress.

You do not need a spreadsheet to see whether your build is getting stronger.

Your castle is now six times larger and firing cannonballs in every direction.

You are probably doing fine.

Wanderburg battle chaos

There is already some criticism from demo players around difficulty, tutorials and explaining progression clearly, which is exactly the kind of thing Randwerk says it wants to work on during Early Access. The studio currently expects that period to last roughly six to twelve months, with more content, variety and balancing added through community feedback.

The developers have also been unusually open about wanting players to break the game. Their Early Access description literally says they want to discover which builds and combinations players “love, break or completely devour the game with.”

That seems appropriate for a game largely based around devouring everything else first.

September Could Get Very Dangerous for Medieval Villages

Wanderburg enters Steam Early Access on September 8, 2026, only days after leaving Gamescom with one of the show's official awards.

The timing could hardly be better.

It has a concept you can understand in about five seconds, a demo that has already attracted hundreds of thousands of players, strong Steam feedback and now the Gamescom Most Entertaining trophy sitting behind it.

There are complicated strategy games about managing medieval kingdoms.

There are realistic games about commanding armies.

There are careful simulations about maintaining castles.

And then there is Wanderburg, which asks a much more important question:

What if the castle simply got up and ate the village?

Apparently, the answer is award-winning.
