Xbox Just Confirmed Its Next Generation Is Not One Console

Microsoft has finally given us a clearer idea of what comes after Xbox Series X and S, and it is much bigger than another black box under the TV

Microsoft has finally given us a clearer idea of what comes after Xbox Series X and S, and it is much bigger than another black box under the TV. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says Project Helix is being built as a “family of devices,” while Microsoft is also designing the hardware to run both Xbox console and PC games. The line between an Xbox and a gaming PC is about to get very blurry.

At Gamescom 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma gave one of the clearest descriptions yet of Microsoft's next generation hardware plans.

Project Helix had previously been introduced as Xbox's next generation console. Sharma now describes it as “a great family of devices for Helix.” Microsoft still is not showing the actual hardware, but those words matter. Xbox's next generation is no longer being presented as one machine replacing the Series X.

That could mean different console models, handheld hardware or other Xbox branded devices built around the same platform. Microsoft has not confirmed exactly how many Helix devices will exist, so anything more specific is still speculation.

What it has confirmed is much more interesting: Project Helix is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games.

And that could fundamentally change what buying an Xbox means.

Xbox Is Slowly Turning Into a Console and PC Hybrid

Microsoft first revealed the technical direction behind Helix at GDC in March. The system uses a custom AMD SoC, with Microsoft and AMD working together on the next generation of DirectX and AMD's FSR technology. Xbox says it is targeting what it calls an “order of magnitude leap” in ray tracing performance, along with more advanced machine learning inside the graphics pipeline.

Microsoft GDC 2026 presentation page:

The more important part for most players is not the ray tracing.

It is the PC support. Helix is being designed so your Xbox console library and PC games can exist on the same generation of hardware. Microsoft has not confirmed exactly which PC storefronts will work on the console, so Steam launching directly on Helix is not confirmed.

But the direction is obvious.

Xbox wants the next machine to feel much less like a closed console.

The ROG Xbox Ally already gives us a small preview of that philosophy. It combines Windows with an Xbox styled full screen interface and can pull games together from multiple PC storefronts. Microsoft later brought that same Xbox mode deeper into Windows 11.

Helix looks like the next step.

Imagine switching on a console, getting the simplicity of Xbox, but having access to a much wider PC style ecosystem underneath it.

Basically, Microsoft appears to be asking:

What if your Xbox was secretly a gaming PC, but you never had to explain graphics drivers to your parents?

That is a pretty appealing pitch.

Your Old Xbox Games Are Coming With You

There is another important part of Microsoft's plan.

Xbox says it intends to keep games from four generations of Xbox playable into the future.

This week Microsoft also announced a new feature that converts supported physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games into digital entitlements.

The system starts testing with Xbox Insiders on August 31.

Insert an eligible disc into an Xbox One or Series X, claim the digital entitlement, and supported games can gain digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud gaming. Microsoft says it is starting with thousands of titles. Your original disc continues to work as normal.

This suddenly makes much more sense when you look at Helix.

If Microsoft's next generation includes consoles, handhelds and perhaps devices without optical drives, converting physical libraries into portable digital licenses gives players a way to carry old purchases forward.

It also arrives at a very interesting moment.

Sony has already announced that production of physical discs for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028, pushing future releases toward digital distribution.

Xbox has not confirmed whether Helix itself will include a disc drive.

Sharma was asked about it at Gamescom and did not give a direct answer, instead emphasizing that future hardware needs to balance affordability and efficiency as component costs rise.

Translation: do not throw away your Series X yet.

A “Family of Devices” Changes the Console War

The phrase “family of devices” may end up being the biggest part of today's news.

For decades, console generations have been easy to understand.

PS2 becomes PS3.

Xbox 360 becomes Xbox One.

You buy the new box and put the old one somewhere in a cupboard where it slowly collects dust beside twelve mysterious HDMI cables.

Microsoft is trying something different.

The company already has consoles, cloud gaming, Windows PCs and Xbox branded handhelds. Helix appears designed to make those devices feel like different versions of the same Xbox platform, rather than completely separate places to play.

Xbox Play Anywhere is already central to this. Microsoft said in March that the program had grown beyond 1,500 games, with progress and purchases moving between supported Xbox and Windows devices.

That gives Microsoft a very different strategy from simply trying to sell more consoles than PlayStation.

The goal is increasingly to make it difficult to tell where Xbox ends.

TV . Console . PC . Handheld . Cloud.

Apparently the answer is just yes.

But We Still Have Some Huge Questions

Microsoft has still not shown what Project Helix actually looks like.

There is no confirmed consumer launch date or price. Microsoft only says alpha hardware will begin going to developers in 2027, meaning the final machines are still some distance away.

We also do not know which PC stores will work, whether every Helix device will run the same games, whether there will be a cheaper model, whether a handheld will be included in the Helix family, or whether any version will include a disc drive.

Those details will decide whether Microsoft's idea feels genuinely new or simply becomes a very expensive Windows PC wearing an Xbox logo.

The reaction from players today already shows that confusion.

One of the most common responses to the “family of devices” announcement on Reddit was simply:

“What does this even mean?”

Honestly, fair question.

But for the first time, Microsoft's next generation strategy is starting to make sense.

Project Helix is not just trying to replace the Xbox Series X.

Microsoft is trying to make Xbox itself independent of one piece of hardware.

If it works, the next console generation may not be about choosing between a PlayStation and an Xbox box anymore.

It may be about choosing which kind of Xbox you want.
