Star Fox Returns on Nintendo Switch 2 With a Modern Remake of Star Fox 64

Nintendo has officially brought Star Fox back.

Revealed during a dedicated Star Fox Direct, the new game is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, 2026. Rather than being a completely new episode, this return is described as a modern remake of Star Fox 64, known as Lylat Wars in Europe.

The game brings Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team back into the Lylat System, where players will once again face Andross and his forces. The structure remains close to the Nintendo 64 classic, with branching routes, aerial battles and replayable missions, but the presentation has been rebuilt for Nintendo’s new hardware.

Nintendo is promising a full visual overhaul, redesigned characters, revamped environments, new cinematic cutscenes, fully voiced dialogue and an orchestral soundtrack. The goal seems clear: keep the fast arcade spirit of Star Fox 64, but make it feel like a modern Switch 2 release.

Several modes have also been confirmed. The campaign will let players choose different routes across the Lylat System, with objectives that can change the path through the game. A Challenge Mode will allow players to replay completed stages with new objectives, while the new Battle Mode introduces 4v4 dogfights between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf.

The Switch 2 features are also a major part of this remake. Joy-Con 2 mouse controls will be supported for more precise aiming, and the game will include GameChat integration, with character avatars and AR filters inspired by the Star Fox universe. GameShare will also allow shared local or online sessions in specific conditions.

For long-time fans, the return of Star Fox is significant. The series has been quiet since Star Fox Zero on Wii U in 2016, and Nintendo is clearly using this remake to reintroduce the franchise to a new audience. It is not the bold new sequel some players may have wanted, but it gives Star Fox a real presence on Switch 2 from the beginning of the console’s lifecycle.

With upgraded visuals, online multiplayer and a release date only weeks away, Star Fox could become one of the early nostalgia-driven highlights of Nintendo Switch 2.
