Kingdom Hearts IV Reveals Coco World and Sora Is Heading to the Land of the Dead

Square Enix has finally given Kingdom Hearts fans something huge to talk about. A new Kingdom Hearts IV trailer has revealed Pixar’s Coco as a playable world, shown new footage of Sora in action, and confirmed that the long-awaited sequel is targeting late 2027.

After years of waiting, Kingdom Hearts IV suddenly feels much closer.

During Disney’s D23 2026 Entertainment Showcase, Square Enix revealed a brand-new trailer for the next mainline Kingdom Hearts game and its biggest surprise was something very few fans expected.

Sora is going to the Land of the Dead from Pixar’s Coco. And yes, it looks absolutely stunning.

The new trailer gives us our first proper look at the Coco world, alongside new gameplay and story footage.

Welcome to the Land of the Dead

The biggest reveal is undoubtedly Coco.

The colorful Land of the Dead has been recreated inside Kingdom Hearts IV, with Sora exploring the same kind of glowing streets, enormous structures and vibrant environments that made Pixar’s 2017 film so visually memorable.

But Square Enix has not simply dropped normal Sora into the movie.

His appearance changes to fit the world around him.

Sora can be seen with a skeletal-inspired design across his face, continuing a Kingdom Hearts tradition where his appearance changes depending on the Disney world he enters.

It immediately makes Coco feel like a real Kingdom Hearts world rather than a simple crossover cameo.

And thematically, it makes a surprising amount of sense.

Coco is a story about memories, family, death and the connections that remain between people even after they are separated.

Kingdom Hearts has spent more than two decades exploring many of those same ideas through hearts, memories, friendship and different worlds.

The combination could work extremely well.

Sora Is Already Fighting Heartless There

The trailer is not purely cinematic.

We also see Sora fighting Heartless inside the Coco world. That is important because it strongly suggests the Land of the Dead will be a substantial playable location rather than a brief story sequence.

The footage shows combat taking place among Coco’s colorful environments while Sora uses his Keyblade and abilities against enemies.

For a series famous for turning Disney films into explorable action-RPG worlds, this could become one of Kingdom Hearts IV’s most visually impressive locations.

And it raises a much bigger question:

What exactly brings the Heartless to the Land of the Dead?

We do not have the answer yet.

But Kingdom Hearts fans will probably spend the next year trying to figure it out.

Kingdom Hearts IV Is Coming in Late 2027

Coco was the flashy reveal.

But arguably the most important announcement appeared at the end.

Kingdom Hearts IV is targeting a late-2027 release.

We still do not have an exact day or month, but after years without a clear release window, this is a major update.

That means Kingdom Hearts IV is being positioned as a major multiplatform release rather than being concentrated around a single console ecosystem.

Coco Is Not the Only Mystery

Quadratum immediately stood out when Kingdom Hearts IV was first revealed because it looks completely different from the colorful Disney worlds fans normally associate with the franchise.

Instead of fantasy castles and cartoon environments, Sora finds himself surrounded by realistic streets, skyscrapers and a modern city.

Even Sora looks more realistic while he is there.

That enormous difference between Quadratum and the Land of the Dead becomes even more noticeable after watching the new trailer.

One moment, Kingdom Hearts IV looks like a modern realistic action game.

The next, Sora is running through one of Pixar’s most colorful worlds.

And somehow, both exist inside the same game.

Three Things to Watch Closely in the New Trailer

1. Sora’s Coco Design

Look closely at Sora when he enters the Land of the Dead.

Kingdom Hearts has transformed him before depending on the world — from a lion to a monster and even an underwater character.

His Coco appearance continues that tradition.

2. The Combat

Do not only watch the cutscenes.

There are short moments of actual combat that give us a better idea of how enemies will interact with the new environment.

3. The Difference Between Worlds

Quadratum and Coco could almost belong to two different games visually.

That may be one of the most interesting things about Kingdom Hearts IV.

The series has always jumped between completely different Disney environments, but the visual gap appears larger than ever this time.

Why Coco Might Be a Perfect Choice for Kingdom Hearts

At first, Coco may seem like an unusual choice.

Pixar has plenty of enormous franchises that could appear in Kingdom Hearts.

• The Incredibles.

• Inside Out.

• Cars.

• Turning Red.

And many others.

But think about Coco’s story for a moment.

A character crosses into another world. The dead and living are separated but remain connected. Memories determine whether someone is truly forgotten. Family relationships exist across different realities. Those ideas fit Kingdom Hearts almost perfectly.

Sora himself is now trapped somewhere unfamiliar, while his friends continue searching for him. That gives Square Enix plenty of opportunities to connect Coco’s themes with the larger Kingdom Hearts IV story.

Now the Big Question: What World Comes Next?

Coco being confirmed immediately opens the door to another question.

Which Disney world will Square Enix reveal next?

There are some obvious candidates.

The Incredibles

A superhero-focused Kingdom Hearts world could create some incredible combat opportunities.

Inside Out

A world built around emotions and memories almost sounds like it was designed for Kingdom Hearts.

Encanto

The magical Casita could make for a very different style of Kingdom Hearts level.

Zootopia

Sora transforming into an animal again while exploring Zootopia would practically write itself.

Star Wars

And then there is the one fans have been debating for years.

Could Star Wars finally appear in Kingdom Hearts?

For now, that remains speculation.

Coco is the big new confirmed addition.

But with more than a year remaining before the current release window, there is plenty of time for more worlds to be revealed.
