GTA VI’s Biggest Reveal Yet Is Coming August 27 and Preorders Are Already ‘Unprecedented’

Rockstar is finally opening the doors on Grand Theft Auto VI. An Extended Look arrives August 27, Take-Two says preorders are unlike anything it has seen before, and Rockstar's latest official material gives us the clearest picture yet of Vice City, Jason, Lucia and the wider state of Leonida.

For most games, an announcement that another preview is coming would barely qualify as news. Grand Theft Auto VI is not most games.
Rockstar confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on August 27 at 3 PM ET on Netflix, before becoming available on Rockstar's YouTube channel and website later that day. Rockstar has not revealed how long it will be or exactly what will be shown, which is important: despite plenty of speculation, a full gameplay demonstration has not been officially promised.
That uncertainty is part of why the reveal is attracting so much attention. GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026, meaning the Extended Look arrives less than three months before release. Until now, Rockstar has largely allowed two trailers, screenshots and carefully written character profiles to carry one of the biggest marketing campaigns in gaming without actually showing fans a traditional long-form gameplay presentation.
Watch Rockstar's Extended Look announcement:
The most recent full trailer gives us an idea of what Rockstar is currently willing to show. Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5 and contains equal parts gameplay and cutscenes, according to Rockstar's official upload. That distinction matters: we have seen GTA VI running, but we have still not been given the sort of uninterrupted gameplay breakdown Rockstar previously used to explain games such as GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.

The story is much clearer now
GTA VI takes players back to Vice City, but Rockstar is no longer presenting Vice City as the entire world. The game takes place across the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City joined by the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga.
At the center are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar describes Jason as a former Army serviceman who grew up around criminals before ending up in the Keys working for local drug runners. Lucia has just emerged from the Leonida Penitentiary after being imprisoned following a fight connected to her family. Their lives collide around a robbery that goes wrong, pulling them into what Rockstar describes as a conspiracy stretching across Leonida.

The supporting cast already gives the world more shape. Cal Hampton is Jason's conspiracy-minded friend who listens to Coast Guard communications. Boobie Ike owns businesses across Vice City and is involved with Only Raw Records. Dre'Quan Priest is trying to build that label around artists including Real Dimez. Raul Bautista is an experienced bank robber looking for people willing to take increasingly dangerous risks, while Brian Heder is an old-school Keys drug runner who gives Jason somewhere to live in exchange for helping with local work.
That cast makes GTA VI look less like a simple story about two criminals and more like a network of people operating across Leonida's music industry, drug trade, robberies, nightlife and local businesses.
Rockstar's official screenshots reveal far more than the trailers
Rockstar's GTA VI media page now contains 70 standard screenshots, alongside another 51 images showing Ultimate Edition content and 12 images for the Vintage Vice City Pack. That makes the official screenshot library one of the best places to look for details that pass quickly in the trailers.

The shots show a world that extends well beyond Vice City's neon skyline. Port Gellhorn looks deliberately run-down, filled with old motels and roadside businesses. Mount Kalaga brings dirt bikes and rough industrial terrain into the mix. Other shots show waterways, planes, boats, beaches, dense streets, clubs and rural areas.

That geographic variety is important because Rockstar itself is calling GTA VI the “biggest, most immersive evolution” of Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar has still not published an official map size, so claims online about exact square mileage should be treated as speculation. What is confirmed is that Leonida contains several distinct named areas outside Vice City.
One of the most striking official screenshots comes from Mount Kalaga:

This is the kind of image that makes the upcoming Extended Look particularly interesting. Vice City is already familiar. What players have seen much less of is how these different regions connect, how much freedom exists between them, and what players actually do once they leave the city.
Those are exactly the areas where Rockstar can reveal something meaningful on August 27 without spoiling much of the story.
Cars, clothes, tattoos and mod shops are already appearing in the new material
The latest promotional images connected with GTA VI's Ultimate Edition are also unusually detailed.
Rockstar's official gallery now includes named images for Rideout Customs Mod Shop, Sara's Unisex Salon, Stock 305 Clothing Store, Electric Fang Tattoo and PTT YOUNGIN$ Illegal Goods Store, alongside motorcycles, boats, customized cars and weapon variants. These appear specifically within Rockstar's Ultimate Edition benefits gallery, so it would be wrong to assume every pictured reward is part of the standard edition, but the locations themselves give a useful look at the types of businesses Rockstar has built around Jason and Lucia's world.

The Ultimate Edition costs $99.99, compared with $79.99 for the standard game. Rockstar says the premium edition contains exclusive vehicles, weapons, clothing and additional content distributed across Jason and Lucia's story.
Another set of images leans heavily into nostalgia.

Anyone who preorders or buys GTA VI before November 20 receives the Vintage Vice City Pack, which includes throwback items inspired by the era most associated with the original Vice City. Digital preorders also include one month of GTA+.
The preorder numbers are apparently ridiculous but Rockstar has not told us what they are
This is where GTA VI's scale becomes difficult to compare with a normal game launch.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said after the company's August earnings report that GTA VI preorders were unlike anything the publisher had previously seen. He described the level of demand as “unprecedented and astonishing.”
What Take-Two did not do was reveal an exact number.
That distinction is worth making because several estimates and claims about GTA VI preorder revenue are circulating online. None should be presented as official sales figures. Take-Two's own position is unusually cautious: Zelnick noted that preorders can still be cancelled and said the company does not want to claim victory before the game has actually been sold.
What we do know is the scale GTA VI is following. Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 230 million copies, while the Grand Theft Auto franchise as a whole has passed 470 million units sold-in worldwide.
Take-Two expects fiscal 2027 Net Bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion, with management explicitly pointing to GTA VI's November launch as a major driver of the company's expected record level of performance.
That does not mean GTA VI itself will make $8 billion. Take-Two's forecast covers the company's entire portfolio. But it shows how central one launch has become to the publisher's financial year.
Even buying GTA VI is slightly unusual
The standard edition launches at $79.99, making GTA VI one of the major releases pushing blockbuster console games beyond the familiar $69.99 level. The Ultimate Edition is $99.99.
There is another notable decision: Rockstar's physical edition does not contain a game disc. Take-Two says the box contains a download code, with physical copies available from November 12 so buyers can begin downloading ahead of launch. Digital preloading also starts November 12.
At launch, GTA VI is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date, and there is no PS4 or Xbox One version.
That means one of gaming's biggest launches will initially be concentrated entirely on current-generation consoles.
The biggest unanswered question may actually be GTA Online
For all the information Rockstar has revealed about the single-player story, it has been much quieter about what happens to GTA Online.
That matters enormously.
GTA Online helped turn GTA V from a successful game into a business that continued generating revenue more than a decade after launch. Investors are therefore watching closely for details on how Rockstar plans to evolve its multiplayer business around GTA VI. Reuters reported that analysts see the long-term online opportunity as one of the most important unanswered questions surrounding Take-Two's future earnings.
Rockstar has not yet laid out a GTA VI multiplayer roadmap, launch date or detailed feature set.
That makes August 27 interesting for another reason. Even a small hint about online functionality could become one of the biggest announcements of the presentation.
So what should we actually expect on August 27?
There is already plenty of speculation. Fans want the map. They want wanted-system details, vehicle handling, interiors, side activities, customization, wildlife, NPC behaviour and some indication of how switching between Jason and Lucia works.
Those are reasonable things to hope for.
They are not confirmed.
Rockstar's wording is simply “An Extended Look.”
That could mean a traditional Rockstar narrated gameplay overview. It could mean a longer cinematic presentation mixing story and gameplay. It could focus heavily on Leonida and its characters. We will not know until Rockstar shows it.
What makes this reveal different is the timing. GTA VI is no longer some distant game represented by a trailer every year or two.
Preorders are open. Prices are set. The editions have been revealed. The November 19 release date remains in place. Rockstar has published more than 100 official screenshots across its different galleries. And Take-Two is openly calling preorder demand unprecedented.
The Extended Look is therefore not another teaser.
It is the point where Rockstar finally has to start showing people what the game they have already ordered actually feels like.
And considering how little traditional gameplay Rockstar has shown so far, August 27 could easily become the most important GTA VI reveal since the game was announced.
