Fortnite Is Turning Battle Royale Into Prop Hunt, Because Apparently Sonic, Tetris and Mega Man Were Not Chaotic Enough
Fortnite's September 3 update is bringing Prop Hunt and Big Heads into normal Battle Royale matches, alongside new Sprites and Loot Hacks

Fortnite's September 3 update is bringing Prop Hunt and Big Heads into normal Battle Royale matches, alongside new Sprites and Loot Hacks. Override was already one of Fortnite's strangest seasons, and Epic seems determined to make every lobby slightly less understandable.
Fortnite currently lets you sprint through Green Hill Zone with Sonic's Power Sneakers, fire Mega Man's Mega Buster, throw giant Tetris pieces into the map and activate consoles that can change the rules for an entire lobby. Apparently Epic looked at all of that and thought: needs more furniture.
The first major Chapter 7 Season 4: Override update arrives September 3, with Prop Hunt and Big Heads joining the Match Override system, plus three new Sprites and another batch of Loot Hacks. That means a normal Battle Royale match could suddenly turn players into props because one person reached the right console first.
Fortnite stopped pretending to be a normal Battle Royale a long time ago. Override might be the season where it fully admits it.
One Player Can Basically Change the Server Settings
The clever part of Override is that its biggest abilities do not necessarily make you stronger. Override Consoles can alter the rules for everybody. They appear during matches, players race to claim them, and Epic even displays the name of whoever activated one so the lobby knows exactly who caused the problem.
On September 3, Prop Hunt joins that system. Activate it and players can transform into objects in the environment, turning the usual late-game paranoia into something much worse. Now the enemy might not be behind the chair.
The enemy might be the chair.
Big Heads is coming back too, except this time as a Match Override. Giving everyone a much larger head in a game built around headshots feels like the kind of balancing decision Fortnite can somehow get away with.

Green Hill Zone Is Basically a Sonic Level With Guns
Override was already ridiculous before this update.
Sonic the Hedgehog headlines the season, and Epic did far more than drop another crossover skin into the Item Shop. Green Hill Zone is an actual Battle Royale location with checkerboard cliffs, loops and Sonic-style movement. Power Sneakers let players use a ground Spin Dash or airborne Spin Attack, while Rings tie into the crossover mechanics.
Then Tails shows up as a Sprite that can help you hover.
Which is cute right up until somebody floats over your cover and deletes you from above.
Community reaction to Green Hill has been pretty funny because players seem to agree on one thing even when they disagree on whether they like it: the place is complete chaos. Players are racing through loops, collecting Rings, bouncing between elevations and using Sprites while everybody else is attempting to remember this is technically still a shooter.
One Reddit player described Green Hill as a giant maze where everyone is “zipping around” at Sonic speed.
That sounds less like criticism and more like Epic successfully understanding Sonic.
And somehow Sonic himself fits.
Epic had to adjust his proportions so he could actually function as a Fortnite character, because normal-sized Sonic holding an assault rifle was apparently where somebody finally decided things might look strange. Tails appears as a Sidekick, while Sonic also gets a transformation tied to Super Sonic.
Fortnite has crossed over with almost everything at this point, but this season feels different because the collaborations are changing how the map actually plays instead of simply standing around in the lobby looking expensive.
Tetris Can Fall Out of the Sky and Mega Man Has a Gun. Obviously.
Sonic is only one part of Override's gaming pile-up.
The season includes Tetris, Mega Man, Persona 5 Royal, Kingdom Hearts, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Pac-Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and more. Mega Man's Mega Buster can fire normal shots, charged attacks and explosive projectiles. The Tetris Rift can drop giant blocks directly into the world.
There is something deeply Fortnite about watching a recognizable suburban area suddenly get covered in enormous Tetrominoes.
The stranger part is that all of these ideas are sitting on top of a new progression system too. Players collect Sprite Dust and spend it on Loot Hacks, which change the bonus items that can appear from their own Chests.
The September 3 update is expected to add more Loot Hack options, including the Rocket Ram, Gold Banana, Tracking Visor, Holo Twister Assault Rifle, Deadeye Assault Rifle and other returning gear.
So Fortnite's loot system is slowly becoming:
Open chest → receive shotgun → also receive whatever nonsense you personally hacked into reality earlier.
I respect it.
The New Sprites Have One of the Best Stories in the Update
Three more Sprites are coming with the update: a new Fortnite-original Sprite plus the community-designed X-Ray Sprite and Onigiri Sprite.
The X-Ray Sprite has a particularly nice story behind it. The design came from Brady, an eight-year-old player, who based the Sprite around the glasses he has worn since undergoing major eye surgery when he was five. His concept was submitted during Epic's community Sprite competition and is now actually being added to Fortnite.
That is the sort of addition that gets buried when an update is reduced to a list of weapons and patch notes.
And Sprites are not just collectibles anymore. Override has turned them into a proper part of Battle Royale progression, with abilities, Sprite Dust and Loot Hacks all feeding into each other.
Fortnite has somehow created a system where carrying a cute little creature around can eventually influence what assault rifle falls out of your next Chest.
Again, completely normal videogame.
The Biggest Risk Is That Fortnite Finally Becomes Too Much Fortnite
There is a real concern underneath all the fun.
Override already has Sprites, Cheat Codes, Loot Hacks, server-wide Overrides, Sonic movement, crossover Mythics, weird POIs and an enormous mix of visual styles happening simultaneously. Prop Hunt introduces another rule-changing layer on top of all of it.
Some players already think the season is too chaotic. Green Hill in particular has been criticised because fights can become difficult to read when people are Spin Dashing, hovering above you and moving through several vertical levels at once.
That criticism is fair.
Fortnite works because it constantly changes, but there is a difference between unpredictable and impossible to follow. If every fight becomes five mechanics screaming for your attention at the same time, the joke stops being funny pretty quickly.
But I would still rather see Epic try this than spend another season announcing that one shotgun has entered the vault while another shotgun has heroically returned from it.

Prop Hunt Might Be the Most Fortnite Feature Possible
Fortnite has survived this long because Epic is willing to do things other Battle Royale developers would probably reject during the first meeting.
This was once a game where its defining feature was building walls during gunfights.
Now Sonic can race through Green Hill Zone while carrying Fortnite weapons, Tails can hover beside him, Mega Man's arm cannon exists as loot, Tetris pieces can fall out of the sky, and somebody across the Island can potentially press a button that turns everyone into household objects.
And somehow all of those sentences describe the same game.
The September 3 update still needs to prove that Prop Hunt works inside a real Battle Royale match rather than becoming another gimmick everyone ignores after two days. But the idea itself is exactly why Fortnite remains so difficult to replace.
Other games add a new map.
Fortnite occasionally wakes up and decides:
“What if the map could become Prop Hunt halfway through the match?”
Now I just need Epic to answer the important question.
If I survive the final circle disguised as a toilet...
does the toilet get the Victory Royale?
